UnitedHealthcare Responds to Ebola Concerns

As you may have heard from recent news reports, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently confirmed the first two cases of Ebola Virus Disease (Ebola), diagnosed at a hospital in Dallas, Texas.

The health and wellbeing of our members is a top priority. In addition, the safety of those who deliver care – physicians, clinicians and nurses – are also a key concern.

UnitedHealthcare’s clinical leadership is engaged with key health authorities, providers and others to closely monitor this evolving situation and support the needs of the people we serve.

Following CDC Guidance
As with any public health issue, UnitedHealthcare will work with and follow all guidance and protocols issued by the CDC, state and local public health departments in supporting our members’ needs.

Currently, there is no FDA-approved vaccine or medication specific to Ebola. Recovery from Ebola depends on early intervention, good supportive care and the patient’s immune response.

At this time, testing for Ebola can only be done at the direction of and in direct consultation with state and public health departments and the CDC. Although the chances are very low, if a UnitedHealthcare member tests positive for the disease, and we are made aware, we will work with the member’s medical team and public health authorities to help facilitate access to appropriate care.

Diagnostic testing and associated care will be covered in accordance with the terms of your health plan.

As you know, this situation is evolving and should there be any significant changes, we will update you accordingly.

“the Affordable Care Act is working”

Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell declared that “the Affordable Care Act is working” in a speech delivered at the Brookings Institution last week, in the process announcing a 25 percent increase in the number of insurers expected to participate in federal and state exchanges for next year. The number of insurers so far is up from 252 this year to 315 for next year. For the federal marketplace serving 36 states, the number is up almost 30 percent to 248 for next year. States seeing a substantial increase in the number of insurers include Indiana, Missouri and New Hampshire. Federal officials also announced that a redesigned Healthcare.gov will include a shorter, simpler online application form for the start of open enrollment in November.

2015 Health Insurance: Things to Know!

Yes, we know there is still a long way to go in 2014, but we suggest you think ahead when it comes to health insurance for yourself and your family. The Affordable Care Act was big news in 2013, we’re not sure it was possible to miss the changes that occurred within the health care system in the United States. We’re not sure sure we’ll have the constant reminders in 2014, so we’ve added a few tips to keep you in the loop as you think about your families health care needs.

For coverage starting in 2015, the proposed Open Enrollment Period is November 15, 2014 – February 15, 2015. Individuals may also qualify for Special Enrollment Periods outside of Open Enrollment if they experience certain events.

  • Change for Effective Date if a Pre-ACA Plan Individual Plan is Terminated in 2014 — The effective date will be the 1st of the month following receipt of the application.
  • Change for Newborn — A birth triggers a Special Enrollment Period that allows the family to enroll for coverage, change a plan or add the baby as a new dependent. Also the baby can be enrolled as a Child Only Policy.
  • Change for Marriage — A marriage triggers a Special Enrollment Period that allows a new couple to enroll for coverage, change a plan or add a dependent(s).
  • Proof of State Residency for Non-US Citizens — Beginning next week, we will be asking non US citizens to confirm their state residency to ensure that they are eligible for plans selected.
  • COBRA — A Qualifying Event is triggered when COBRA coverage is exhausted at the end of the COBRA period.
  • Legal Guardianship — Legal Guardianship is a Qualifying Event and treated similar to a birth or adoption.
  • Permanent Move — We need proof of prior and new residence location.
  • Employer’s Bankruptcy — If this results in the loss of coverage for retirees, then this is considered a Qualifying Event for these retirees.
